Maria Calver, 31, teaches exam tuition in a Gloucester High school. When she is referred a transfer from Ireland, 16yr old Nadia Sheridan, Maria finds herself drawn in by the troubled girl's needs and desires, and soon develops troubling feelings of her own. Maria is tortured by her fears and lies, and suspecting her student may not be sincere, she plans to keep her feelings secret at all costs.

Following Maria's introspective, UNRAVEL weaves sensually through the complicated relationship between two females, divided by age, professional boundaries, and social and moral codes. Maria has to decide whether to remain faithful to her career or take a gamble with an inappropriate kind of love.

Some months later, Maria stands accused of conducting a sexual relationship with Nadia, and is investigated by forensic psychologist, Dr Evelyn Richmond, who interviews witnesses close to the couple in her search for the truth. With explicit excerpts from Nadia's journal, UNRAVEL invites readers to pick apart the alleged facts from fiction to understand what really occurred between Maria and Nadia.

Another great story in this genre that I didn't see it coming. No expectations does wonders for ones reading experiences. It's really a good read, but also a heavy one. Understandable when you realize from the get-go that Maria is not an ephebophile. Her existence and her relationship with Nadia is not just a means to an end to another shallow, yet titillating taboo tale.

This is the story of the forbidden relationship between a 32-year-old teacher and her 17-year-old pupil. The story happens through Maria (the teacher) own narrative, through (fictitious or factual) excerpts from Nadia personal journal and from the investigation progress made by one Dr. Evelyn Richmond, a forensic psychologist who tries to uncover a possible sex crime committed by Maria.

Rebecca S. Lazaro has crafted quite the provocative narrative to tell her story. And to be quite frank, I am probably not the demographic for this kind of story, as this type of relationship, even in its fictional form, usually just makes me profoundly uncomfortable.

But not this time. Because this is a well-crafted, believable and heart-felt story. It's carefully paced and constructed. There is lust in here, yet this story is not about lust. Maria is a character I could thoroughly empathized with. Even with my own personal bias on this type of relationship, her feelings for Nadia and her own inner conflict brought in me a deep feeling of compassion instead of distaste. While her unethical actions might be frown upon, there still is a lot of integrity in her conflicted behavior. And if in the end she still does what she shouldn't be doing, she tries to do so by following an absurd and desperate self-imposed code of morality.

And while I have to admit I thought Maria, as a character, was too much on the uptight, boring side, I also think that this is a story that focus more on the drama of a forbidden relationship than on the characters themselves. And for this story, specifically, Maria serious, honorable and, well, kinda bland nature might not be a great spectacle to watch, but it's still an essential part of the story that enables the conflicted nature of the narrator to exist and be believable.

(...listen, you might be thinking I'm reading too much into this book, but if people out there manages to find deep meaning and write long reviews on abstract expressionist art, then I'll exercise my right to do the same in here!)

The sense of progression in this story is also a well-executed one, in my opinion. It is a bit like watching a train-wreck in slow motion. You know where it's heading, you know it's not good, and yet all you can do is brace for the final impact. It might be a bit too long for my taste and yet, by chapter 27, something unique happens - Dr. Evelyn Richmond arrives in the narrative as the forensic psychologist hired by the high school to independently investigate the accusation of abuse of trust between Maria and Nadia. And so, she becomes the one telling the story. And with the shift to this new narrator, we totally lose the perspective of what was really going on between Maria and Nadia and are left with what we knew of their relationship prior to that and what Dr. Richmond is able to pierce together after. I loved that. Such a clever little narrative device. It ended up making me more invested in the story. Was the outcome somewhat predictable? Yes, absolutely. But it was also quite entertaining in my opinion.

My final thoughts on this one is that I really enjoyed it. And while it's maybe a little too long for my taste, it's still a very interesting story. Also, this is currently part of the Kindle Unlimited program, so if you're a subscriber, I'd definitely recommend you give it a try. At the very least, I think it's an unique read in this genre.

Unravel eBook Rebecca Lazaro Reviews

Long, slow burn of a story that becomes a page turner in the second half. Overall, exciting read to discover the truth behind the emotion and feelings of a maybe forbidden romance between a teacher and her student. Was it truth or lies? Read this book and find out!
It was a ok book however the age of consent in England is 16 so if Marie the teacher had sex with the 16 year old student all she could face is getting fired. This book is not correct.
